After years of leading in competitive industries, my wife and I took a micro retirement to travel extensively, visiting every U.S. state, every Canadian province, and a number of international destinations. Along the way, we met people from all walks of life, in big cities and small towns, across cultures and languages.
What stood out most wasn’t just the landscapes or the milestones, but the conversations, the kind of genuine, unfiltered connections that remind us of our shared humanity. In a world where social media often drowns out dialogue with noise, where AI writes the job description, the résumé, and even decides who’s qualified, it’s clear that people are longing for something more: genuine connection, authentic relationships, and meaningful conversation.
And yes, there’s a touch of grey around the edges these days, but that comes not just with time, but with the hard years we’ve all faced: seasons of challenge, setbacks, success, and failure. Those experiences aren’t blemishes, they’re proof points. They’ve shaped my perspective and deepened my appreciation for resilience, empathy, and the importance of listening before leading.
